French President Nicolas Sarkozy and German Chancellor Angela Merkel are "in complete agreement on the measures to be announced" in Brussels to defend crisis-hit euro nations, Sarkozy's office said.

The two leaders spoke on the telephone Sunday evening "to discuss the means to be put into place to resolve the financial crisis", sparked by debt-addled euro nations, Sarkozy's office said in a statement.

"They were in complete agreement on the measures that will be announced this evening by Ecofin (European Union finance ministers) in line with the conclusions of the Eurogroup which met last Friday at the level of heads of state and government," it said.

EU finance ministers are in emergency talks in Brussels tasked by euro leaders with heading off predatory threats to government finances, commercial banks and wider economic recovery after shares tumbled across the globe last week.
