Sanofi-Aventis shortens name to Sanofi
French pharmaceutical group Sanofi-Aventis on Friday rebaptised itself simply Sanofi, abandoning the double-barreled name it acquired along with Aventis in 2004.
The decision was taken nearly unanimously at a general shareholders meeting in Paris, which also approved a new orange and blue logo.
Chief executive Chris Viehbacher said the reason for the change was simplicity, although he said the company wouldn't forget its heritage.
The company's name has changed several times since starting as a unit of French oil company Elf Aquitaine as it acquired other firms.
