CHAMONIX, France, Aug 11 (AFP) - Police in the French Alps said Wednesday they were searching for a 25-year-old British officer cadet who went missing at the weekend after a night of clubbing with friends in Chamonix.

Blake Hartley, a student at the Sandhurst military academy, had come to Chamonix with eight other officer cadets for a week of training in the mountains.

After spending several hours in a Chamonix nightclub on Saturday, the group returned early Sunday to the campground where they were staying, and Hartley told his friends he was going for a walk alone, according to police.

His friends launched a search an hour later when he failed to return to the campsite. Police were alerted to Hartley's disappearance later Sunday.

Divers, fire-fighters and aerial reconnaissance teams have been combing the area for signs of Hartley and questioning residents, but to no avail.
