PARIS, Aug 10, 2006 (AFP) - Air France-KLM reported on Thursday that sales in the first quarter had risen by 11.9 percent to EUR 5.80 billion on strong passenger traffic.

"This very good performance can be explained by strong growth in all sectors and particularly passenger traffic," the airline said.

Overall sales for passenger transport rose by 12.1 percent to EUR 4.61 billion, and passenger traffic increased by 7.7 percent in the quarter. The number of seats on offer increased by five percent.

The airline, which has raised its fares to compensate for rising fuel costs, declined to give figures for the extra revenue generated by fuel surcharges.

Freight traffic revenue rose by 10.5 percent to EUR 729.0 million.

The airline published the sales data just as European airline traffic was thrown into chaos owing to airport security measures in Britain following arrests in connection with an alleged plot to blow up airliners.

Shares in the airline fell 3.34 percent to EUR 19.02 in early trading here. Other shares in European airlines were also showing falls following the announcements in Britain.
