A 46-year-old man who was thrown from a sailboat amid rough seas managed to tread water without a lifejacket for three hours before being rescued off the French coast on Saturday.

French officials said the amateur yachtsman was part of a five-person crew that ran into strong winds and five-metre waves some 60 kilometres (37 miles) off of Cannes in southern France.

After receiving an alert, area rescue workers dispatched a helicopter which struggled to find the sailor amid 70 kilometre per hour winds, and had to refuel before finding him some three hours after the ordeal began.

The sailor was transported to an area hospital and was in good condition.
