PARIS, April 9, 2006 (AFP) - French car manufacturer Renault said on Saturday it was recalling some of its Scénic models because of a problem with the vehicles' back seat safety belts.

A spokesman for the company told AFP part of the safety belt did not always fasten tightly enough.

He was unable to say how many of the cars would have to be recalled worldwide. But German website 'Auto service praxis online', alleged 888,647 Scénics could be affected around the world.

Renault said it would tighten the seatbelt clip on the cars concerned. It insisted this was a preventative measure and not action taken following a safety incident.
