VERSAILLES, France, Feb 17 (AFP) - France's famed Chateau of Versailles launched a call Thursday for philanthropic companies to help save the crumbling three-centuries-old statues dotted about its expansive gardens.

Cracks, erosion and signs of wear are now apparent on most of the 296 statues scattered throughout the grounds, all of them works by some of France's most important 17th sculptors, the management of the former royal palace said, adding that urgent care was now required.

Versailles is one the country's most visited attractions, with seven million people passing through its ornate gates each year. Its gardens are listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

The statues, many of which feature figures from classical mythology or allegorical representations, have received little attention since they were put in place from 1674.
