BERLIN, March 6, 2007 (AFP) - French Socialist presidential candidate Segolene Royal said here on Tuesday she had agreed with German Chancellor Angela Merkel that struggling aircraft maker Airbus must be "defended".

"We completely share the aim that Europe must defend its aeronautical venture," Royal said after the two women held their first face-to-face meeting.

Royal said it was particularly important to defend Airbus' "research capacities."

France and Germany are the two biggest shareholders in Airbus, which announced last week it was cutting 10,000 jobs over four years -- including 4,300 in France and 3,700 in Germany -- as part of a rescue plan.
