Rostropovich widow misses Cannes

CANNES, France, May 19, 2007 (AFP) - The widow of the late Russian cellist and dissident Mstislav Rostropovich has cancelled her appearance at the Cannes film festival because of heart problems, a film company spokeswoman said Saturday.

CANNES, France, May 19, 2007 (AFP) - The widow of the late Russian cellist and dissident Mstislav Rostropovich has cancelled her appearance at the Cannes film festival because of heart problems, a film company spokeswoman said Saturday.

Galina Vishnevskaya, a renowned soprano, was due on the French Riviera to promote "Alexandra" by Alexander Sokurov, which will enter the competition Thursday.

In the film, the 80-year-old Vishnevskaya plays a grandmother visiting her grandson, an officer at a Russian army base in Chechnya.

Rostropovich died last month at the age of 80.
