Romanian couple charged with selling baby in France
A couple in Romania have been charged with selling their baby to a Romanian family living in France, a judicial source said Tuesday.
The parents, aged 29 and 30, had accepted to sell their infant in 2004, even before it was born, in exchange for several installments of 5,000 euros (6,490 dollars), of which the final amount of 2,000 euros was transferred on Monday, the source said.
The couple were arrested just as they were about to withdraw the amount from a bank. They were granted liberty by a court but were banned from leaving the country.
If they are found guilty, they may be sentenced to up to 20 years in prison for trafficking a minor.
Romanian authorities are trying to repatriate the infant and charge the adoptive parents.
