PARIS - Journalists at the French office of the British media group Reuters are to stage a 24-hour strike Thursday to protest against job cuts, unions said Wednesday.

"This decision reflects a fear among journalists that the deliberate policy of reducing staff numbers ... will inevitably result in a lowering of the agency's standards," the unions said in a statement.

They said management in London had refused to discuss their demand that new staff be appointed to jobs that have been left vacant this year.

In May Reuters agreed to a take-over by Canadian publisher Thomson Corp, with the aim of creating the world's biggest provider of financial news and data.
