PARIS, Sept 19 (AFP) - French car maker Renault said Sunday that its budget EUR 5,000 (USD 6,000) Logan, currently aimed at developing markets, would soon go on sale in western Europe, but at EUR 7,500.

"We will start selling the Logan in France and Germany in June, gradually followed by other western European countries," said Renault chief executive Louis Schweitzer.    "This is something we had not initially planned to do," he told French radio RTL.

The Logan, developed by Romanian car maker Dacia and its parent company Renault in a plant near Bucharest, hit Romanian streets earlier this month ahead of its worldwide launch later this year.

The vehicle, which is similar in engine power to the Renault Clio although slightly larger, is destined for neighbouring Balkan countries, Russia, Ukraine, Turkey, Iran, North Africa, Latin America and eventually China.

Schweitzer said Renault had decided to market the Logan across western Europe following an unexpected surge of interest.

But for the more affluent western market, the Logan will be priced at around EUR 7,500 - to reflect the cost of transport from Romania, the Renault chief explained.   It will be sold under the Dacia brand, with the added mention "by Renault".

"We are not expecting huge sales in France and western Europe," said Schweitzer, who added he did not think the low-budget car would undermine sales of existing Renault small models such as the Twingo and the Megane.

"Buyers could be people who would otherwise have bought a second-hand car, or people who want to keep a second car at a country home," he speculated.   Renault has said it is aiming for annual sales of 700,000 Logans by 2010.
