PARIS, May 9 (AFP) - Prime Minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin was released from France's top military hospital Monday after undergoing emergency gall bladder surgery at the weekend.

"The prime minister has left the military hospital of Val-de-Grace today to return" to his office, the office said in a statement.

Raffarin's emergency operation knocked him off the campaign trail for the EU constitution, just three weeks before French voters go to the polls in a crucial May 29 referendum.

The unpopular premier, whose approval rating stood last week at an all-time low of 22 percent, was forced to cancel several appearances this week, both at public pro-constitution meetings and on national television.
