Qatari bank QNB has begun talks on buying a majority stake in Turkey's DenizBank, a subsidiary of the Franco-Belgian banking group Dexia that is currently being broken up, QNB said Tuesday.

QNB said in a statement that negotiations were still at an early stage.

"Their success depends on the compatibility of DenizBank activities with QNB's international development strategy, along with an agreement on a price that reflects the financial position of DenizBank and its results," it added.

Dexia declined to comment when contacted by AFP.
