MARSEILLE, France, March 10 (AFP) - A gang who terrorised motorists in the south of France by targeting freeway rest areas and following drivers home to rob them has been arrested after a long police operation, officers said Wednesday.

Four Frenchmen, all residents of the Mediterranean city of Marseille, were apprehended Tuesday after a car chase in which one officer was injured.

Police said the men picked their victims in rest areas along France's southern toll autoroute network. After following them, they pounced, sometimes robbing them at home, sometimes stealing the car.

Officers had been on the lookout for the men, nicknamed "the Subaru gang", for months, after noticing a sharp rise in autoroute robberies.
