PARIS, March 1, 2006 (AFP) - A French prosecutor is seeking a 20,000-euro (24,000-dollar) fine against the imprisoned terrorist Carlos the Jackal for gloating over the September 11, 2001 attacks in the United States.

The case stems from a jailhouse television interview broadcast in March 2005 in which Carlos -- real name Illich Ramirez Sanchez -- expressed satisfaction over the attacks and allegedly laughed that "the Great Satan got it up the arse".

State prosecutor Laurent Zuchowicz told a court Tuesday that the statements were a sign of Carlos's "megalomania" and argued that the fine should be levied to punish him for the crime of justifying terrorism.

Carlos's lawyer -- and fiancée -- Isabelle Coutant-Peyre had unsuccessfully sought an acquittal, saying the comments, made by telephone to a team at France's M6 television network, were taken out of context and "obscenely" cut together.

A verdict is expected in several weeks.

Carlos, 56, is serving a life sentence in a French jail after being convicted in 1997 for the 1975 murder in Paris of two police officers and a turncoat militant working for a Palestinian group.

Born in Venezuela and touting a Marxist-Leninist ideology, Carlos earned notoriety as one of the world's most feared terrorists in the 1970s and 1980s, especially after a spectacular 1975 kidnapping of oil ministers during an OPEC meeting in Vienna.

He once boasted that his plots killed more than 1,500 people over two decades, and told M6 television that he did not believe there were any innocent victims of terrorist acts.

Carlos was captured by French intelligence services in Sudan in 1994, while sedated for a liposuction operation.
