A military enquiry into the wounding of three French soldiers in Afghanistan last week concluded they were hit by fire from another French unit, a source close to the investigation said Wednesday.

The enquiry was launched after the soldiers were wounded, one of them seriously, on August 23 in an area northeast of Kabul where two French troops were killed by insurgent fire a few hours earlier.

That incident brought the French death toll in the Afghan conflict to 47.

The enquiry was conducted by France's military representative in Afghanistan.

Most of France's 3,500 soldiers inside Afghanistan are based in districts around Kabul. They are part of a NATO-led multinational force fighting the Taliban.
