PARIS (AFP) - The French president's spokesman refused to comment Wednesday on a report that Nicolas Sarkozy and his wife Cecilia went before a judge on Monday to start separation proceedings.
Le Nouvel Observateur magazine said on its Internet site that "the president and his wife went before a judge on October 15 at the end of the day to initiate separation proceedings."
Reports have been circulating for several days that the couple could be on the verge of a split, but Sarkozy's spokesman has refused to comment on what he terms "press rumours."
Cecilia Sarkozy, a 49 year-old former model, has barely been seen at the president's side since he took office in May. On Monday it was announced that she will not accompany him on a state visit to Morocco next week.
The pair married in 1996 and have a 10 year-old son, Louis, as well as two grown-up children each from previous marriages.
Their relationship has been turbulent, and they separated for several months in 2005 when Cecilia went to New York with an advertising executive.
Before the May election Cecilia Sarkozy made clear she did not see herself as a conventional first lady, telling an interviewer that the idea "bores me".
