PARIS (AFP) - French President Nicolas Sarkozy will give a speech before members of the US Congress on November 7 during a two-day official visit to the United States, Sarkozy's spokesman said on Friday.

"To be invited to give a speech before Congress is a very great honour which is given only exceptionally to a foreign guest. We are very honoured," Sarkozy's spokesman David Martinon said.

During the November 6-7 visit, his first official trip to Washington since being elected in May, Sarkozy will hold talks with US President George W. Bush during which Iran's nuclear programme is expected to figure highly.

France, a permanent member of the UN Security Council, has sharpened its dialogue against Tehran since Sarkozy was elected, calling on EU countries to impose new sanctions outside the framework of the United Nations.

Bush and Sarkozy met in August in the casual setting of the oceanside Bush family compound in Kennebunkport, Maine. They also met on the sidelines of a G8 summit in Germany in June.

US-French relations deteriorated sharply under Sarkozy's predecessor Jacques Chirac who opposed the 2003 US-led invasion of Iraq.
