PARIS, May 16, 2007 (AFP) - French President Nicolas Sarkozy made his first public appearance since taking office Wednesday, rekindling the flame on the tomb of the unknown soldier under the Arc de Triomphe.

The president waved to crowds as he was driven up the Champs Elysees in an open-top limousine accompanied by scores of uniformed riders from the Republican Guard.

After a ceremony at the victory arch, Sarkozy shook hands with bystanders and then descended the Champs Elysees by car to lay wreaths at statues of prime minister Georges Clemenceau and wartime leader Charles de Gaulle.

He once again conducted a brief walkabout amid shouts of "Sarko" and "Nicolas" from the crowd.

Earlier Sarkozy officially took over from Jacques Chirac in a ceremony at the Elysee Palace.
