PARIS, June 26, 2007 - One of Sarkozy’s campaign promises, reforming French universities, will be delayed by at least a week.

The CPU (conference of presidents of universities) was informed of this presidential decision with an SMS from the Elysée Palace.

The reform project will give universities more autonomy, change the way they are administered and introduce entry selection for Masters' students.

President Sarkozy decided to give labour unions, student unions and the CPU more time to review the law projects which was met with hostility from professors and students.

Sarkozy will meet with other unions and representatives on Tuesday and during the week, hoping to diffuse tensions and show signs of consideration for university professionals’ views.
