PARIS, 8 mars 2007 (AFP) - President Jacques Chirac of France is to make a televised address to the nation on Sunday evening, in which he is expected to announce his decision not to stand for a third term in next month's presidential election.

"The President of the Republic will speak to the French on Sunday March 11 at 8 p.m. (1900 GMT)," a statement from the Elysee palace said.

The 74 year-old president, who has been in office since 1995, has refused to rule out running for a new mandate, but political commentators and Elysee insiders say it is highly unlikely.

Much interest Sunday will focus on the president's decision whether or not to endorse the right-wing candidate in the election, Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy.
