PARIS, Dec 14 (AFP) - Guards in the famed Versailles Chateau outside Paris quickly ushered hundreds of visitors out of the imposing property Tuesday because of a power cut that put safety and anti-theft systems out of operation.

The blackout was traced back to a transformer supplying electricity to the 17th century palace, management said, adding that it would remain closed until early Wednesday to allow repairs to be carried out.

The chateau and its elegant gardens, built to be a vast royal residence for King Louis XIV, attract 10 million visitors a year, making it the second most popular paid tourist site in Europe after the Disneyland Paris theme park east of the French capital which attracts 13 million people a year.
