PARIS, March 17, 2007 (AFP) - Public support for French President Jacques Chirac who recently announced his retirement from politics increased in March, according to a newspaper poll Saturday.

PARIS, March 17, 2007 (AFP) - Public support for French President Jacques Chirac who recently announced his retirement from politics increased in March, according to a newspaper poll Saturday.   

Support for Chirac, who was head of state for 12 years, jumped three points from last month to 46 percent, with 53 percent saying they were dissatisfied, according to the IFOP poll for Le Journal Du Dimanche.

Dominique de Villepin, a loyal supporter of the president, also saw a rise in popularity to 40 percent, an increase of two points on the February poll.

Over half, 58 percent, said they were unhappy with the prime minister, a drop of two points on last month.

The poll was conducted by telephone between March 8 and 16, with 1,935 people questioned.
