PARIS, May 22, 2007 (AFP) - Pope Benedict XVI has been invited to come to France next year and has agreed in principle to the visit, the French bishops' conference (CEF) said Tuesday.

The invitation was issued by Bishop Jean-Pierre Ricard of Bordeaux and by Jacques Perrier, the bishop of Lourdes, it said.

Next year will be the 150th anniversary of the events of 1858 in Lourdes, a small town in the foothills of the French Pyrenees, where Roman Catholics believe the Virgin Mary appeared to a young miller's daughter inside a cave.
