PARIS, June 8, 2006 (AFP) - French police are to be equipped with "electronic petrol detectors" in a bid to clamp down on the car-burning which plagues many poor city suburbs, Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy said Thursday.

The gadgets can detect traces of petrol on human skin and clothes, and thus help provide evidence for prosecutions against car-burners.

"We are going to put an end to this national sport, which is extremely shocking when you realise that 40 or 50 cars are being burned every night in France," the minister said.

Thousands of cars were set alight during last November's riots in the high-immigration 'banlieues'.
