Police detain 30 in Paris gang fights

PARIS, Aug 28, 2007 (AFP) - Police detained 30 people overnight in Paris after rival gangs armed with cleavers and machetes clashed in the Pigalle nightlife district, a police source said Tuesday.

No one was seriously injured in the fight between two youth gangs who also clashed at the Gare du Nord train station on Sunday, according to police.

About 50 gang members were involved in the Pigalle fight, but only six remained in custody on Tuesday. The police source said some of them had been "armed with machetes and cleavers".
