Polish customs officers have arrested a US national suspected of sexually abusing five boys in the United States, and who has been on the run for months, Interpol said Thursday.

John Hamilton, 39, had been charged with abusing the boys, aged 10 to 16, and was about to plead guilty in a US court when he fled to Germany in late 2009.

He was arrested in the southwestern town of Gliwice on Wednesday as he was travelling in a Denmark-bound bus from Krakow.

Officers identified him as a long-term fugitive from an Interpol data base.

Hamilton's name was on a list of 450 people wanted by the Lyon-based organisation.

It said its so-called Infra-Red operation launched in May in 29 countries around the world had already led to the arrest of "more than 140" people on the run.
