Pimp defends Strauss-Kahn: IMF work left no time for orgies
A Belgian pimp under investigation along with Dominique Strauss-Kahn for allegedly procuring prostitutes for sex parties, insisted Friday that the disgraced former IMF boss was innocent.
"I think that with his work at the IMF, he had other things to do than organise orgies," Dominique Alderweireld, a convicted pimp widely known as "Dodo la Saumure" (Dodo the brine), told Canal Plus television.
The comment came a day after the one-time favourite to be the president of France came face to face with a call girl in the latest stage of the lengthy probe into charges against him.
He was confronted with the escort girl in a courthouse in Lille as part of prosecutors' attempts to assess different versions of events that led to him being charged with "aggravated pimping as part of an organised gang."
Strauss-Kahn has admitted attending sex parties in France and the United States, but insisted he did not know some of the women present were being paid for their services.
His lawyers have argued that he could not have known as the female participants were naked during the events.
Strauss-Kahn's legal team failed in a December bid to have the pimping charges dismissed in the only outstanding case against their client.
The Socialist politician last month agreed a financial settlement with a New York hotel maid whose 2011 allegation of sexual assault forced him to resign from his IMF job and wrecked his chances of becoming French president.
Strauss-Kahn admitted a sexual encounter took place but insisted it was consensual. A criminal probe into the incident collapsed after the maid changed her version of events.
French prosecutors however are convinced they have a case against Strauss-Kahn in what is known as the "Carlton affair".
It centres around allegations that business leaders and police officials in Lille operated a vice ring supplying girls for sex parties, some of which are said to have taken place at the northern city's Carlton Hotel.
Others allegedly took place in Washington, where the International Monetary Fund is based.
Alderweireld on Wednesday became the 10th person to be charged with aggravated pimping. His nickname Dodo la Saumure is a reference to the curing liquid used for mackerel, which is French slang for pimp.
