TOKYO, Nov 9 (AFP) - The Japanese unit of French automaker Peugeot SA will recall 20,040 cars across 12 models for free repairs of defects in their fuel systems, the transport ministry said Tuesday.

The cars of the 306-series, including the 306 XR and the 306 Break, were imported and sold in Japan by Peugeot Japon Co. between July 1993 and January 2001, the ministry said in a statement.

Fuel may leak from fuel pipe connectors "in the worst case" due to improper molding which could lead to cracks in their seams, the statement said.

Peugeot's recall has followed 55 claims of defects in the domestic market but no accident has been reported as a result of the fault, the statement said.
