PARIS, Feb 6, 2007 (AFP) - Several French economists and business leaders signed an open letter Tuesday in defence of taxation, in response to tax-cutting proposals put forward by right-wing presidential candidate Nicolas Sarkozy.

"We agree to taxes and reject cuts in taxation whose end result would be a lack of means for social protection, education, research, health, housing and the environment," according to a copy of the letter published in the left-wing newspaper Liberation.

Among those who signed the letter are former EU commission president Jacques Delors and Jacques Maire, who is on the board of the insurance giant Axa.

Sarkozy -- who is leading in the polls ahead of April's election -- has proposed reducing wealth tax and bringing down compulsory pay-roll charges to the European average.
