LIMA, July 22 (AFP) - Former UN secretary general Javier Perez de Cuellar resigned Thursday as Peru's ambassador to France, foreign minister Manuel Rodriguez said.

Rodriguez said the resignation was for personal reasons.

Perez de Cuellar served as UN head from 1982-1991.

"He is the most illustrious ambassador Peru has had," Rodriguez said.

Perez de Cuellar served as ambassador to Paris for three years, the period he had agreed to before taking the post.

He also served as foreign minister and as first minister during the transitional government of president Valentin Paniagua (2000-2001) after president Alberto Fujimori abruptly resigned under a cloud of scandal in 2000.
