PARIS, Jan 14 (AFP) - The population of Paris increased by 17,000 people over the past five years, the first such increase in decades, Mayor Bertrand Delanoe announced Friday.

The increase amounts to a mere 0.8 percent, as the city's total population stood at about 2.2 million people when the last census was taken in 1999. Delanoe did not give a specific population figure for 2004.

The Socialist mayor said that between 1975 and 1999, 171,000 "working-class and middle-class Parisians were chased out," due to the relatively high cost of living in the French capital.

"Over the past five years, not only has this exodus stopped, but there are now 17,000 more Parisians," the mayor exulted, adding: "Paris is regaining its lustre."
