PARIS, Jan 12 (AFP) - Paris police said Wednesday they had detained three Chinese nationals and a Cambodian in connection with a vast counterfeiting ring and seized thousands of fake luxury watches, handbags, belts and tee-shirts.

The four people, including a woman believed to be the mastermind of the operation, were to appear in court on Thursday, police sources said.

Police experts said the estimated market value of the fake goods was about EUR 2 million euros (USD 2.6 million).

The arrests capped a six-month investigation that began in July last year, when police looking into a possible case of extortion in the French capital's Asian communities seized several hundred fake Dior, Gucci and Vuitton handbags.

After months of surveillance, police identified a building in the Belleville neighbourhood of eastern Paris as the headquarters of the counterfeiting operation.

The goods were made in China and brought to France for resale, police said.

Police seized 1,250 fake luxury watches, more than 1,300 handbags and several hundred belts, scarves, pairs of sunglasses, tee-shirts and shoes, all bearing designer labels.
