PARIS, Sept 14 (AFP) - Paris police said Tuesday they had smashed a network that was helping illegal Chinese immigrants to reach France, Germany, Italy and Spain through Charles de Gaulle airport outside the French capital.

Police said the network was atypical as the group of about 10 traffickers who were arrested and placed under formal investigation were Europeans and north Africans, not Chinese nationals as is usually the case.

Hundreds of illegal Chinese immigrants are believed to have used the network, which has been in place for more than a year, to obtain false passports made from stolen identity papers and visas in order to get to Europe.

The immigrants paid EUR 20,000 (USD 24,500) for the trip from China to Europe, investigators said.
