PARIS, March 11 (AFP) - French police said Friday they had dismantled a prostitution ring exploiting Ghanaian women that operated out of a squat in Paris and detained some 20 suspects.

The three suspected ringleaders, an Ivorian man and two Ghanaian women, were still in preventive detention on Friday. Most of the others arrested were Ghanaian prostitutes who did not have valid residency papers.

About 40 prostitutes worked out of the squat in northern Paris, charging EUR 20 for each encounter, police said.

One of the women told police she had been forced to prostitute herself in order to pay the EUR 27,000 (USD 36,200) she owed to the suspected ringleaders for bringing her to France from her home country.

The other women and suspects brought into custody were "not very talkative," according to police, who said conditions in the squat "were from another time, rudimentary and with women turning dozens of tricks a day".
