PARIS, June 24 (AFP) - Six French police officers have been detained and charged with raping prostitutes and breaking drugs laws, a legal source told AFP on Thursday.

The six men, who worked at a police station in the down-market Paris suburb of Seine Saint Denis, were arrested and charged on Wednesday with rape, gang rape, breaking drugs laws and failing to report crimes, said the source, who asked not to be named.

The officers, aged between 24 and 29, were taken into custody following complaints several months ago by their colleagues, who accused them of rape and racketeering.

Seine Saint Denis has a reputation for social problems and a high crime rate.
