PARIS, July 6 (AFP) - A groan of disappointment swept through Paris Wednesday as the city learned London had beat it in the competition to host  the 2012 Olympic Games.

In front of the city hall, thousands of people who had been expecting to celebrate victory looked downcast and some let out boos as the news was broadcast live on two big video screens.

French President Jacques Chirac wished London "good luck" in staging the 2012 Olympic Games.

He gave his reaction in a statement issued by his office in Paris as he was flying from Singapore -- where the International Olympic Committee decision was made -- to Scotland to attend a three-day G8 summit hosted by British Prime Minister Tony Blair.
