PARIS, March 24 (AFP) - Paris police were Wednesday hunting a gang of brazen robbers who calmly blocked off busy city streets before knocking over their targets - chic jewellery boutiques catering to the very well-heeled.

The latest heist occurred Tuesday, when a jeweller in the upmarket 16th arrondissement in the west of the capital was targeted, officers said.

Gang members overpowered the two employees in the shop, roughing one of them up, before making off with EUR 200,000  (USD 245,000) in precious wares. The incinerated remains of their getaway car was found later.

As with a previous robbery, in which a watch-seller in a rich part of central Paris was hit March 10, the gang took care to block off the street to prevent passers-by raising the alarm or blocking their escape.
