PARIS -- The French defence ministry on Wednesday denied a new report that four of 10 French troops who died in a Taliban ambush in Afghanistan were captured and executed by the insurgents.

"There were no prisoners and they were not executed after being taken prisoner," said a spokesman.

Government spokesman Luc Chatel had earlier declined to comment when asked about the report in the satirical weekly Le Canard Enchaine.

British and American newspapers had previously also reported that four French soldiers were captured during the ambush last week.

Le Monde newspaper reported last week that according to French troops wounded in the fighting, NATO air strikes called in to help the ambushed troops missed their targets and hit French soldiers, as did shots fired by Afghan troops backing them up.

But both the Pentagon and NATO denied this.
