PARIS, Aug 14, 2007 (AFP) - About 200 people gathered in Paris Tuesday to protest a series of police raids targetting illegal immigrants, days after a 12-year-old Russian boy fell from an apartment block during one such raid.

The protestors cited the case of the young Russia, Ivan, to support their case for an end to the raids.

He was hospitalised in a coma after the raid in the northern city of Amiens last Thursday, after following his father who was fleeing the police.

The demonstration was organised by the Education Without Borders Network (RESF).

The French government has said it is determined to send home illegal immigrants, of which it estimates there are between 200,000 and 400,000 in France. It has set itself a target of 25,000 before the end of the year.
