PARIS, Jan 17 (AFP) - At least 10,000 people marched in central Paris on Saturday to protest against government plans that would ban the Islamic headscarf and other religious insignia from schools, police said, while organisers claimed a turnout of 20,000 people.

"There are already 20,000 of us and more are coming," said an official from the Party of French Muslims (PMF), the small group which organised the rally.

The march was called in protest at a new "secularity" law whose main provision would be make it illegal for teenage Muslim girls to attend classes with their heads covered. The bill is to get its first reading in parliament on February 3.
