BRUSSELS, Feb 9 (AFP) - France Telecom and the French government are appealing against a European Commission order that France Telecom must repay French state aid deemed illegal, the European Court of Justice said Wednesday.

The court, questioned by AFX, the AFP financial news service, confirmed a report published Wednesday in the French newspaper Le Figaro.

France Telecom operator was ordered on August 2 to pay back to the French state an amount estimated at between EUR 800 million and EUR 1.1 billion (USD 1.0-1.4 billion) plus interest.

The telecommunications operator was also deemed to have received state aid in the form of a shareholders' advance from publicly owned ERAP.
