PARIS, Sept 6 (AFP) - The French courts have set a trial date of October 25 for Papa Wemba, the Congolese music star accused of aiding illegal immigrants to enter France as members of his entourage.

The 55 year-old singer, whose real name is Hungu Wembadio Pene Kikumba, will appear at a court in the Paris suburb of Bobigny where he risks a sentence of 10 years in jail and a fine of EUR 750,000 (USD 905,000).

Papa Wemba was detained in February 2003 on suspicion of taking sums of up to EUR 3,500 per person in order to smuggle Africans into France. He was granted conditional release in June.

The musician faces similar charges in Belgium.
