PARIS, May 31, 2006 (AFP) - Paris Saint Germain (PSG) football club was placed under judicial investigation Wednesday over claims it colluded with US sports goods maker Nike to arrange secret top-up fees for players, justice officials said.

The salary supplements allegedly financed by Nike enabled PSG to pay less in social charges and the players to cut their tax bills, according to investigators.

Several senior officials at PSG and Nike have already been placed under investigation — which in French law is a step short of formal charges. Nike France and Nike Europe are also under investigation as corporate entities.
