PARIS, March 12, 2007 (AFP) - French Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin officially came out in support of the right-wing candidate for the presidency Nicolas Sarkozy, in an interview on French radio Monday.

"Today I am with Nicolas Sarkozy to defend the ideals of our political family and so that the choice for the French people is as clear as possible," Villepin told Europe 1 radio.

Villepin, long a political rival of Sarkozy and once considered a potential presidential contender himself, made the announcement the day after President Jacques Chirac announced his political retirement.

"I will be by his side because it is the political ideal of my political family, it is my commitment," added Villepin.

"We have been together in government, we will be together in this battle."

Sarkozy, the leader of the ruling Union for a Popular Movement (UMP), is currently one of the top three candidates in the French presidential race.
