NICE, France, April 25 (AFP) - One person was killed when a private helicopter crashed Monday in the Alps region of south-eastern France near the border with Italy, emergency workers said.

The body of the pilot was found at the scene of the accident, a steep rocky area near the town of Tende at an altitude of 2,000 meters (6,600 feet).

"We have confirmed that there was one victim, and we believe that there was only one person on board," a rescue team spokesman said.

Earlier, preliminary police reports indicated that four or five people had been aboard the aircraft when it crashed around midday.

Fire-fighters, who were alerted by witnesses to the crash, immediately sent several rescue teams to the scene.   The helicopter was being used to bring building materials to a construction site in the difficult-to-reach area, emergency workers said.
