President Barack Obama departed Andrews Air Force base outside the US capital late Sunday, beginning a European trip with stops planned in Ireland, Britain, France and Poland.

Air Force One carrying the US leader, First Lady Michelle Obama, and his closest aides took off from Andrews Air Force Base outside Washington at about 10:25 pm local time (0225 GMT Monday).

The US president will begin his tour in Dublin. His overnight stay includes a visit to the home of his great-great-great grandfather in rural County Offaly and a speech in Dublin's College Green road.

Obama will first meet President Mary McAleese and Prime Minister Enda Kenny after he steps off Air Force One at Dublin Airport early Monday.

Obama will on Tuesday fly to London where he will be the guest of the queen during a two-day state visit.

Later in the week, he will attend the G8 summit in France before rounding off the trip in Poland on Friday.
