PARIS, Jan 26 (AFP) - France's Opera de Nice marks the 120th anniversary of the inauguration of its theatre next month with a performance of Verdi's "Aida", as it was staged on its opening night on February 7, 1885.

A gala is to be held in the French Mediterranean coastal town to celebrate the anniversary on February 7. Four other performances of the opera take place from February 9-16.

Belgian soprano Isabelle Kabatu, who originates from Africa, takes lead role in the performance, joined by Russian tenor Sergei Larin and Italian mezzo Elisabetta Fiorillo Amneris.

Opera de Nice director Paul-Emile Fourny, a Belgian, heads up the production, with Italian Maurizio Arena in charge of musical direction.

The theatre of the Opera de Nice was designed by Nice's Francois Aune and was built after a fire destroyed the opera's previous theatre in 1881.
