PARIS, Aug 14, 2007 (AFP) - An Italian television journalist holidaying in Paris has been declared clinically dead after being assaulted by thieves in the underground network, the Paris prosecution service said Tuesday.

Sergio Vantaggiato, 40, a sports reporters for the private channel TeleRama, was admitted to a Paris hospital with serious head injuries late Sunday after the attack in Bir Hakeim station, at the foot of the Eiffel Tower.

Doctors were expected to switch off his life support machine later on Tuesday.

According to prosecutors, who have no witnesses or security camera footage of the incident, Vantaggiato was found lying, covered in blood, in a metro corridor after trying to pursue two thieves who had stolen his rucksack.

Le Parisien newspaper reported that he smashed his head after tripping in a staircase. An investigation has been opened for bodily harm unintentionally leading to death.
